I’m not sure how it happened, but I recently got into watching Teen Titans Go. Like, a lot. It’s turned into a sort of guilty pleasure, except that I don’t really feel guilty about watching it. It’s a cartoon and it’s pretty silly, but they have weird episodes about very grown up stuff. Like one where they teach you about rental income property and building equity.
Theres an episode called Thanksgetting where all the characters complain about Thanksgiving being the worst holiday, and I think I’m starting to agree with them. They basically say that Thanksgiving is just a boring holiday with tired, old traditions. And while it’s nice to see family…
“Thanksgiving is just the same food, at the same table, with the same people, getting into the same arguments about politics.” – Cyborg
There’s also the history. Thanksgiving started when the Pilgrims and members of the Wampanoag Indians shared in an Autumn feast after the Pilgrim’s first successful harvest. It’s a wonderful story and nice to hear about Native people and colonizers living in harmony. But it’s also one of the few stories that doesn’t involve European settlers massacring Native Americans. It’s a holiday that hides how poorly Native people were treated by talking about this one time there was a peaceful feast. And that sucks. Thanksgiving sucks. And we shouldn’t need a holiday to think about what we’re thankful for.
So we put together a playlist about songs we like and we’re thankful for, that have nothing to do with Thanksgiving. ‘Cuz we can do whatever we want, and that makes us thankful.
Listen to Thanksgetting – A Cool-Tite Playlist about doing what you want.
