You know when you’re at a show and you think, “Holy shit! I can’t believe I’m watching this”? Yeah, that’s what I thought multiple times seeing Ty Segall and the Muggers at The Smell.
We walked in just in time to catch CFM, which was awesome. It was exactly the right music you’d expect to hear from Charles Moothart. It had an early metal sound, similar to his other band, Fuzz, but a little toned down.
But of course, Ty Segall was the star of the night. When you’re used to seeing Ty with a guitar in his hand, or a guitar in his hand and playing drums at the same time, it was refreshing and wild to see him as purely a frontman. The frantic energy usually reserved for strumming a guitar was unleashed on the stage, with Ty jumping into the crowd, crawling on the floor, drooling, and other general mayhem.
It was an awesome show and I left thinking it was possibly the best show I’ve ever seen. Maybe Ty is that good, maybe it’s a combination of Ty and the venue. Either way you should not miss Ty Segall any time he plays. He just rules.
