If you grew up going to shows in LA, then The Smell holds a special place in your grungy heart. The all ages, alcohol-free, DIY music and arts venue has been a staple of the LA punk and underground music scene since 1998. On January 8-9, 2016, it celebrated it’s 18th birthday with a 2-day party, with local bands and the people that make it such a unique and amazing place. The Smell is located in downtown LA, volunteer run and most shows are only $5. If you go, you will probably see kids hanging out in the alley between bands, the self-appointed, homeless security guard, and owner Jim Smith working the door or running around putting out fires. Like he is literally putting out fires.
We were able to catch both days of the party and it was wild! Just like The Smell’s teenage heart. Check out our photos. Day 1 was shot on film with a point-and-shoot camera, and Day 2 was shot digital on a Fuji x100t.
